Kampung Baru

Ben van Wijnen

"Once you arrive at the first stop on Pulau Redang (Kampung Baru Jetty) with the public ferry then you should get off if your resort is located near Kampung Baru. A few of these resorts include the highly recommended Taaras Beach and Spa Resort and also Redang Island Resort and Redang De Rimba Resort."

Kampung Baru - Redang

The only place of any significance on Redang is Kampung Baru. This town is close to the sea and has shops, a mosque, a hospital and a school. If you take a ferry from Kuala Terengganu (Shahbandar Jetty) you'll arrive at the jetty of Kampung Baru. The problem for many is that you still have to go to your resort, which usually lies on Long Beach. Long Beach is, as the word says, "an impressively long beach" with powdery white sand and is inaccessible by car or motorcycle. The tourists will have to rent a boat to take them to Long Beach.
Kampung Baru has a hotel: De' Rimba and a guesthouse: Asmadi Guest House. This is his budget hotel, anex restaurants. Most inhabitants of the kampong are originally from Kelantan and Terengganu. Most owners of the resorts on the island are mainly Chinese.

As mentioned, tourists staying on Long Beach have to take a boat to the resorts. Redang does not have an extensive road network. The only road on Redang was running from North to South, past the airport. Recently they built a two road, which runs from the old road to Teluk Bakau and from there to all resorts on Long Beach. The four-kilometer-long road runs behind the resorts and is meant to provide the hotels when it is no longer possible due to a turbulent sea.

Long Beach is located on the eastern side and is not accessible by car or motorcycle due to the mountain range. If you want to walk to Long Beach, you have to go through a dense forest to reach the other side of the island, where Long Beach is located.
If you want to do jungle trekking, you should hire a local guide. Unless you want to risk getting lost in the tropical jungle with wild animals all around you. Hiring a local guide is also recommended.

Busy, arrival at the jetty

With an motorbike on Pulau Redang you'll have the freedom to roam around the village and perhaps to some of the coastal areas, but it will certainly not take you to Long Beach from Kampung Baru (or vice versa). For some tourists, renting a motorbike is still worthwhile, because the thought of walking 2 kilometers to the nearest beach at Kampung Baru in a heat of 30 degrees is pretty discouraging.
The road network is limited. So also, when you have rented an motorbike in Kampung Baru, you can not drive far, but you have to stay close to Kampung Baru. Still, there are motorbikes for rent for about 10 - 12 Euro per day.
As you have probably already understood, the most practical way to get from Kampung Baru to Long Beach is by sea. Fortunately, there are boat services that can arrange this for you. The only drawback of this option is the price. Renting a boat to take you from Kampung Baru to Long Beach or vice versa costs a maximum of 100 RM per person. This rate is quite high, even for Malaysian standards. However, the price may drop when several people want to join the boat. With a stay of 3 hours you have enough time to relax, swim and enjoy the beautiful beach landscape.
If you still feel like it, you can also climb to the top of Bukit Besar Mountain with a guide. There you can enjoy the breathtaking view of the island and the surrounding waters. But take a bottle of water with you, because you will get thirsty. Incidentally, the water on Redang is not drinkable. You can wash yourself with this water and brush your teeth with it.
